Honestly, I hate everything about masks. I hate that it divides people and hampers communication. And that I can't hear what anyone says when they wear a mask. I hate that it makes my face itch and my nose look big. I hate that the science doesn't make sense and that intelligent people believe that masks are more important that all the other actually productive ways of cutting down on covid19 transmission. Have you noticed that people have put away the hand sanitizer and aren't washing their hands as much? We are experiencing covid fatigue! However, I do believe that the Bible teaches us to follow the law unless it is calls us to denounce Jesus Christ. So, I wear a mask when I go to the store and other places that I have to-- while I fight to change the narrative about masks and while I sign the petitions to make masks optional, especially for children, and support the organizations that are pushing to make wearing masks optional. I know that these issues are highly personal and close to our hearts, and we all tend to righteously defend our position. I suggest is that you go to scripture yourself and see what God says about how and when to fight for truth and righteousness. It's ok to see things differently. But I do believe that we should be sincere about our choices and be able to back our position from the Word that is adequate for every situation. I always try to ask-- am I working for God's kingdom or am I working for. my own kingdom? This helps me sort out some of the grey issues in my life.

There is a struggle right now between who should be in charge of our personal health choices. The mask issue is really about our freedom and right to make our own decisions. The state has already taken away so much of our rights by saying children can be given dangerous and permanent life altering drugs and surgery to change their gender without parental knowledge or consent and taking away the legal authority of parents to get gender affirming therapy for a child who thinks they want to be the opposite sex. I think people sense that we are on a slippery slope and are rightfully fighting for our ongoing shred of autonomy. Schools are working to make school the primary place to take care of all the student's health, physical, mental, and emotional needs. So, will they edge out parental authority again and mandate covid vaccines for students through school based health clinics? Will this happen without parental knowledge or consent? Where will it stop? The idea that the state knows best is a not consistent with our constitutional heritage. Personally, I got the vaccine because I wanted to see my grand children and I have had no ill effects, although there is a lot of scary information out there. I tend to trust that the vaccine was somewhat vetted but I can understand the hesitancy of others. However, I don't see any value in wearing masks that have not been shown to make a difference and to me is just encouraging a very unsanitary habit. Masks probably could cut down the transmission somewhat IF they were worn properly. But the facts are they that they aren't worn tight to the face and consistently changed. I see almost everyone touching and adjusting their mask. It makes my face itch and I can't keep my hands off, either! They are dropped and put back on the face and are defiled in a myriad of ways. And, the younger the mask wearer, the more they tend to contaminate it and the less likely, it seems to me, that the good will outweigh the bad effects of lost learning and communication.

What happens in schools matters to everyone, not just to parents with school age kids! Public schools are training the next generation of leaders, workers, employers, and neighbors. But they have traded excellence for equity. No one knows what is true anymore. Reality is being reinterpreted in a way that denies God and defies our Judeo-Christian values. The world needs your voice! God calls us all to stand up for righteousness and protect the vulnerable. My name is Linda Farrington. I am a retired nurse with six children who graduated from South Salem High School and now have five grand children, two who are currently enrolled in the Salem Keizer School District. I ran for school board this past spring and lost by just a few votes which turned out to be for the best because out of that has sprung a community movement to encourage all of us to engage more fully and effectively with the School Board and other leaders. If we don't speak up and influence the narrative we cannot complain about the outcome. "We Stand" is a group of parents and community members who want to engage and participate in school matters because the values and ideas that are taught there affect all of us. We are learning together how to engage more effectively. And we are compiling tools and information so that you can be more informed about the issues. When public schools succeed, we all benefit! Our goal is to promote excellence and transparency. The bible teaches us to speak the truth in love. There is an important balance here because when Jesus pointed out the sin to the Samaritan woman it was for the purpose of healing her. I believe we too need to speak truth but do it in a manner that heals and helps. This doesn't mean that we will always be well received. It is uncomfortable to speak truth. But we must do it. How can we be salt and light if we do not engage with our neighbors? Salt is not sugar! It can be irritating but it is also a preservative and brings out taste. It works when it is in contact with food. It doesn't do anything in the salt shaker. Christians are called to exercise godly influence over the whole of society and bring the flavor of Jesus to the world. Salt is associated with wisdom and purity. We are to speak wisdom and truth from God's Spirit. Friends, it's time to get out of the salt-shaker and into the world! Let's take a stand together!
